Philly Marathon Training W1D1
And thus, marathon training has officially begun again. I guess this was technically day 2 as day 1 was rest. I didn’t share it with you, but I dominated the actual day 1(rest). Dominated.
The first run of the training plan was an easy three miles. With this, I failed. Looking at the splits, remembering that speed is not my forte, you may think I did well. But, I am following the Hansons Method in which pace is very, very, important. For me, an easy run is supposed to be between 12:05 and 12:55 pace, which, by the way, outside of a treadmill I’m not sure how to maintain such a slower pace.
It’s going to be a new and different mindset for me. I used to just run whatever my legs would go. Now I am going to have to be conscious of pace and keeping it slooow during the easy runs. Interesting note, if I was actually running for the Hansons, every time my pace went above (i.e. faster) than prescribed during the easy runs they would have me doing push-ups. That would have been a hellalot of push-ups. So, where is this supposed to get me? It is supposed to get me to a 4:45 marathon. My first was 5:23, so this would be a great improvement.
So, if you are supposed to run an easy pace, why did you run so fast Shrinkingmomma? Well, this run, which was last night, happened to coincide with a 5k which I had previously signed up for. So, I wanted to give my all. Of course with the heat wave we have been in, I actually started to think that I may have ended up at easy pace. Luckily, though, it did cool down a bit, and I was able to run a good 5k pace. Not a PR and I’m still awaiting that elusive sub-30 5k. However, I am happy with my time. Let’s just ignore the fact that I was running it with some people that don’t really run and a few of them beat me. In all fairness, the ones that beat me were 23 and 24 year old guys. I’m crediting some of my slowness to the fact that I am an old lady. I can’t keep up with these kids generally. We went out for some drinks after the race and as we were leaving, they were planning on going to Foxwoods from there. Foxwoods is a casino about two hours away. And some of them were working this morning! I went home and to bed. Got up at 8:30 because there’s only so long that the Little Man will stay in bed and I am dragging! It’s tough to get old!
Anyway, getting back to the marathon training. I don’t think that not falling in line with the prescribed pacing for the first of many runs is going to really impact my training. I will work on maintaining pace in the easy zone when I have my next run which is tomorrow for another easy 3. Oh, and in case you’re curious, my pace last night would be the easy pace for a 3:35 marathon. Yeah, in my dreams…
